Press Release : 2566 ewes have been shorn

2566 ewes have been shorn during 24 hours of non-stop shearing, with 2 teams of 3 shearers working in relay, 6 tonnes of wool, 85 volunteers, 6 national and international judges, trucks and tractors going back and forth dozens of times, 21 farmers, and 5 transporters; a unique and unexpected event created by the AMTM, the organising body for the World Sheep Shearing championship, has just come to an end at the Marché au Cadran des Hérolles in the Vienne.

To ensure its collective success, every detail was covered to enable the AMTM to achieve its goal. Shearers, coaches, physios, farmers, transporters, volunteers, judges and partner organisations; all made themselves available to promote the sheep shearing profession through a sporting challenge which impressed the numerous visitors who came to watch. Raising awareness of the importance of the sheep industry in all its dimensions, from breeding to shearing, was also fundamental to the event for Christophe Riffaud, president of the AMTM and his entire team. Mission accomplished!

The next major events for the AMTM in the run up to the World Championship in 2019: The National Limousin Competition in Châteauroux and the “La Ferme s’invite” Agricultural Show in Poitiers.

2566 !!!!!

An exceptional result achieved by the two teams during 24 hours of shearing. In more detail: Team 1: 1279 ewes shorn : run 1 : 333, run 2 : 314, run 3 : 307, run 4 : 325. Team 2: 1287 ewes shorn : run 1 : 337, run 2 : 315, run 3 : 308, run 4 : 327. Another important figure, only 8 ewes were not included in the count, out of 2574.

An average of 106 ewes per hour by 2 shearers, which is 53.45 per shearer, demonstrating the endurance and physical performance of the competitors. And exceptional quality, scoring an average of 9.97 for the whole 24-hour period for the 6 shearers, illustrating a consistently high standard of shearing over the 4 runs.

24 hours non-stop for a shearing record

There were people shearing, collecting and sorting! The clock was ticking! The crowd were applauding! This has been an enormous physical challenge for everyone, including the volunteers, farmers, and transporters who have adapted themselves to the pace of the shearing machines over the 24 hours. 24 hours which have upset many a biological clock. In addition, the conditions for shearing were especially difficult due to the ewes’ thick fleeces. So, among the remarkable results of this record, it is worth noting the average number of points recorded for the quality of the shearing. For the two female competitors, Eleanore and Jalle Resneau, they had an average of 9 and 10,1 points respectively! Of the 670 ewes shorn in 8 hours by the female shearers, only 1 animal was not included by the judges in the count!! During 24 hours, the arms pushed hard and the machines buzzed continuously thanks to the teams working in relay. The volunteers, woolhandlers and farmers who continued to supply the shearers all helped to maintain the right conditions for the collective success of this exceptional record.

The AMTM has taken a further step in its journey towards the World Sheep Shearing Championship. Rendezvous in 2019 in Le Dorat (87), France, from the 4th to the 7th of July.
